Nonostante Jay-Z guidasse la lista delle nomination di quest’edizione con ben otto candidature, i grandi vincitori dei Grammy Awards 2018 sono stati senza dubbio Bruno Mars e Kendrick Lamar.
Il re del funk e il rapper più incensato dalla critica hanno portato a casa i premi più ambiti, ricevendo i grammofoni d’oro nelle sezioni dedicate all’album dell’anno e la canzone dell’anno.
Paradossalmente Jay-Z entra Papa ed esce cardinale dal Conclave dei Grammy Awards 2018, che si sono svolti nella notte tra domenica 28 e lunedì 29 gennaio al Madison Square Garden di New York: Kendrick Lamar e Bruno Mars, rispettivamente a quota sette e sei nomination, lo hanno infatti surclassato e il signor Carter è tornato a casa senza premi nelle categorie principali.
Se Jay-Z è tornato a casa a mani vuote, Bruno Mars ha fatto invece l’en-plain: l’hitmaker ha infatti vinto tutti e sette i premi per cui è stato nominato: Album, disco dell’anno e miglior album R&B per 24K Magic, ma anche Canzone dell’Anno, miglior Performance R&B e miglior canzone R&B per That’s What I Like, oltre ad altri premi minori. Emozionato sul palco nel ricevere così tanti riconoscimenti per il suo ultimo lavoro in studio, Mars ha ricordato i suoi primi giorni da giovane performer che intratteneva i turisti nella sua terra nativa, alle Hawaii, e ha citato gli scrittori e produttori Babyface, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis e Teddy Riley tra gli artisti che hanno avuto la maggiore influenza sulla sua carriera.

Bene ha fatto anche Kendrick Lamar, secondo grande vincitore della serata, con cinque Grammy tra cui quello per il miglior video musicale per Humble, miglior canzone rap e migliore performance rap. Vincitore anche per il duetto Loyalty con Rihanna, che lo ha premiato sul palco e si è congratulata con l’amico rapper. Lamar ha poi trionfato nella sezione per lui più ambita, quella dedicata al miglior album Rap: accettando il premio, ha voluto rendere un tributo agli artisti che lo hanno preceduto come vincitori della categoria, incluso il candidato rivale Jay-Z: “Questo è un premio speciale. Mi hanno mostrato la vera definizione di cosa fosse un artista, non si tratta di riconoscimenti, macchine e vestiti… riguarda la prossima generazione. Jay-Z, Nas, Puff – mi hanno illuminato attraverso i loro testi da vicino e da lontano“.

Alessia Cara ha vinto la categoria dedicata al miglior emergente, unica artista femminile premiata durante la serata: la cantante ha ritirato il premio commentando di aver fatto pratica per un discorso di accettazione dei Grammy fin dall’infanzia.

Sul fronte pop, Ed Sheeran ha vinto due Grammy con Divide e Shape of You, mentre tornano a casa senza premy Lady Gaga e Lorde. Tra i premi per il genere rock, al compianto Leonard Cohen è andato il Grammy per la miglior Performance in You Want It Darker, il suo quattordicesimo e ultimo album, pubblicato un mese prima della sua morte.
