La data scelta per il rilascio aveva fatto pensare ad un potenziale pesce d’aprile, invece il video di Monopoly di Ariana Grande e Victoria Monét è arrivato per davvero.
Lunedì 1° luglio è stata rilasciata la clip del brano che vede la popstar duettare con una delle sue migliori amiche nonché co-autrice di molti dei suoi successi. Si tratta del primo duetto inciso in studio per le due cantanti, che hanno lavorato insieme sin dai tempi del primo album di Ariana Grande, Yours Truly, nel 2013. Nell’ultimo progetto discografico della popstar, Thank U, Next, la Monét ha firmato due singoli, 7 Rings e la title track, che hanno dominato negli ultimi cinque mesi la Billboard Hot 100.
Anche interprete oltre che autrice e compositrice, Victoria Monét ha invitato Ariana Grande a unire le voci in Monopoly, dopo aver già duettato dal vivo allo Sweetener Tour della popstar in un altro inedito, un brano scartato dalla tracklist dell’album Dangerous Woman.
L’uscita del video di Monopoly, traccia non inclusa in alcun album, è arrivata in un momento particolarmente felice per entrambe, visto che il brano 7 Rings di Ariana Grande di cui la Monet è co-autrice ha appena completato ben otto settimane in cima alla classifica dei singoli americana Billboard Hot 100.
Il brano è stato rilasciato proprio per ringraziare i fan dell’affetto dimostrato e rappresenta uno dei progetti più personali per la Grande, visto che oltre a duettare con la sua migliore amica, per il video di Monopoly la Grande si è affidata all’ex fidanzato Ricky Alvarez, che ne cura la regia. Alvarez ha iniziato a lavorare con Ariana Grande nel 2014 come ballerino e i due si sono frequentati tra il 2015 e il 2016 (erano insieme nel famoso video che suscitò incredibili polemiche negli Stati Uniti perché la cantante, notoriamente vegana, leccava una ciambella in un bar).
Sin dalle ore precedenti l’uscita del brano, Monopoly è diventata un caso per alcuni versi fatti trapelare sui social, tra cui un versetto che alcuni fan hanno interpretato come un coming out di Monét e Grande: le due artiste si identificano entrambe come bisessuali? “Mi piacciono le donne e gli uomini” è la frase che ha suscitato scalpore tra i fan della Grande, che pur essendo un’icona gay e una sostenitrice dei diritti civili non ha mai accennato ad un orientamento bisessuale (piuttosto, ha dedicato Thank U, Next ai suoi ex fidanzati), ma a ben vedere il verso è cantato dalla sola Monét, che ha già fatto coming out lo scorso novembre su Twitter e potrebbe essere un semplice inno all’amore universale fuori da ogni etichetta di genere.
