Aveva promesso ai fan che avrebbe pubblicato nuova musica prima del previsto e in effetti Thank You, Next di Ariana Grande è stato rilasciato in modo del tutto inaspettato alla mezzanotte tra sabato 3 e domenica 4 novembre su Spotify e Youtube.

La popstar americana, dopo un mese trascorso nel lutto per la morte dell’ex compagno Mac Miller, ha deciso di tornare sulle scene con un brano biografico ispirato alle relazioni sentimentali più importanti che ha vissuto nella sua vita: il testo cita e ricorda tutti i suoi ex fidanzati, dalla prima storia importante (quella col rapper Big Sean) all’ultima appena naufragata (il matrimonio saltato con l’attore Pete Davidson), passando per la storia che più l’ha segnata visto l’epilogo tragico dello scorso settembre.

“Vorrei poter dire grazie a Malcolm perché era un angelo“, canta la Grande al termine della prima strofa del suo nuovo singolo: Malcom James McCormick era il nome di Mac Miller all’anagrafe, il rapper di Pittsburgh morto di overdose lo scorso 7 settembre a soli 26 anni, con cui la Grande ha avuto una relazione di due anni.

Nel testo cita i suoi ex e li ringrazia perché ognuno di loro le ha insegnato qualcosa, lasciandole una consapevolezza in più, per poi pronunciare un invito a se stessa ad andare avanti e ringraziare per ciò che verrà in futuro. “Uno mi ha insegnato l’amore /
Uno mi ha insegnato la pazienza / Uno mi ha insegnato il dolore” canta la popstar, che non si rammarica delle sue storie finite perché ognuna di esse le ha lasciato un insegnamento: “Ho amato e ho perso / Ma non è questo quello che vedo / Basta guardare quello che ho trovato“.
