Small Talk di Katy Perry è il nuovo singolo che fa seguito a Never Really Over, contrariamente alle aspettative del pubblico.
Precedentemente, infatti, la popstar aveva annunciato Harleys in Hawaii come nuovo singolo estivo, prima di cambiare idea e ripiegare sul brano scritto con Charlie Puth.
Small Talk ha fatto il suo debutto il 9 agosto: Katy Perry lo ha scritto con Jacob Kasher Hindlin, Johan Carlsson e Charlie Puth, con gli ultimi due che hanno curato anche la produzione del singolo. Un brano che si inscrive nella stessa scia di Never Really Over, sia per stile che per temi, raccontando una storia finita e le sue conseguenze.
Questa volta, la Perry si concentra sull’imbarazzo di passare il tempo con un ex compagno, sottolineando come diventi difficile ritrovare una confidenza tra chi ha vissuto un amore: “Abbiamo avuto conversazioni sul per sempre, ora parliamo del tempo (…) Siamo passati da estranei ad amanti ad estranei per la vita“.
Nonostante un testo a tratti divertente, la canzone non riesce ad essere coinvolgente per la mancanza di un’apertura, di un crescendo, di una qualche melodia che lo renda degno di essere ricordato, restando ingabbiato in una sequenza un po’ anonima di suoni e nell’eccesso di ricorso all’autotune. Un brano ben lontano dalle hit dell’era d’oro della popstar, che con questi ultimi brani sembra essersi appiattita su un pop più annacquato e decisamente meno energico delle ere discografiche precedenti.
Non è chiaro se Small Talk avrà o meno un videoclip ufficiale (la Perry sta invece girando quello di Harleys in Hawaii) intanto è stato pubblicato un lyric video.
Katy Perry ha dichiarato più volte di non avere in progetto un nuovo album di inediti e di voler pubblicare singoli brani senza la pressione di dover realizzare necessariamente un disco, anche se in una diretta via Instagram, al lancio di Small Talk, ha dichiarato che “le canzoni sono brevi capitoli e sono entusiasta che voi scopriate l’intero libro“. Avrà dunque cambiato idea?
