La popstar californiana sembra essere tornata all’era discografica di Teenage Dream col nuovo singolo rilasciato il 31 maggio: Never Really Over di Katy Perry è un brano pop che racconta l’ossessione per un amore rispetto al quale sembra impossibile andare avanti, ma l’atmosfera è tutt’altro che drammatica, decisamente soft e quasi tropicale, perfettamente calzante al periodo estivo.
La traccia è stata prodotta da DJ Zedd, con cui la Perry aveva recentemente lavorato al duetto 365, e contiene un campionamento della canzone Love You Like That della cantante norvegese Dagny.
La Perry ha dichiarato di aver lavorato a questa canzone quando era in tour per l’album Witness e che la sua parte preferita del testo è la seconda strofa, che accenna all’idea di un’ossessione d’amore accecante e totalizzante, dalla quale però si può uscire lavorando su se stessi.
Il video di Never Really Over, che ha debuttato insieme alla canzone, è stato girato a Malibu per la regia di Philippa Price e mostra la cantante entrare in una sorta di ritiro spirituale per dimenticare il suo amore malato. Un posto definito come un buen retiro per curare il cuore spezzato (lo stesso che si è fatta tatuare insieme ad alcuni fan e che mostra nella parte finale del video).
Un luogo di tranquillità e sincronicità. Un luogo dove le persone si uniscono attraverso i loro cuori infranti. Un posto per imparare che anche se a volte può sembrare che queste vecchie relazioni non finiranno mai, attraverso le nostre attività saremo in grado di lasciarle alle spalle.
Nella clip, ricorre il simbolo dello yin e dello yang, usato come metafora della vita e della ricerca del benessere interiore: “Il simbolo dello yin-yang riguarda l’accettazione della luce e dell’oscurità. Non sarai mai libero dall’oscurità, ma devi accettare che forse può essere il modo per raggiungere la luce” ha spiegato la popstar.
