Mantenendo la sua promessa di rilasciare cinque inediti prima dell’uscita dell’album Madame X, la Regina del Pop continua a pubblicare singoli promozionali dal nuovo album: Crave di Madonna feat. Swae Lee è il terzo brano scelto per anticipare il disco in arrivo sul mercato mondiale il prossimo 14 giugno.
Un nuovo featuring per Madonna, dopo quello con Maluma in Medellin che ha fatto da apripista all’intero progetto ed è stato accolto con opinioni contrastanti: la cantautrice continua a pubblicare canzoni inedite dal suo album Madame X per mostrare le varie facce dell’alter ego con cui ha deciso di dare forma al disco. Crave arriva una settimana dopo l’uscita di I Rise, brano dal forte messaggio politico contro la proliferazione delle armi negli Stati Uniti, scritto sull’onda della tragedia strage di Parkland del febbraio 2018.
Con il terzo estratto da Madame X, dopo le influenze reggaeton e l’elettropop dei primi due singoli, Madonna punta su uno stile R & B e hip-hop grazie alla collaborazione col rapper Swae Lee, un modo per dimostrare quanto diverse siano le fonti di ispirazione alla base del nuovo album, che mescola sonorità molto eterogenee e – almeno finora – non sembra avere un registro stilistico univoco.
Prodotto da Mike Dean, frequente collaboratore di Kanye West, il brano ricorda vagamente nello stile Four Five Seconds, che fu scritta dallo stesso Dean e incisa da un trio d’eccezione come Rihanna, West e Paul McCartney. Il brano fonde pop e hip-hop in un groove ipnotico che accompagna un testo molto esplicito: “Perché tu sei quello che bramo e le mie voglie diventano pericolose, le sensazioni non svaniscono mai, non penso che dovremmo giocare così” canta Madonna nella strofa, con Lee che entra in scena nel ritornello. Un brano che sembra rispondere con un’affermazione di libertà – anche sessuale – alle polemiche seguite all’uscita di Medellin sull’inopportunità di una connotazione così sensuale per una diva ormai sessantenne. Madonna aveva replicato alle accuse di essere ormai troppo matura per presentarsi come icona sexy nelle sue canzoni e nei suoi video dalle pagine di British Vogue, in un’intervista in cui ha parlato anche dei suoi rapporti con Lady Gaga.
Le persone hanno sempre cercato di zittirmi per una ragione o per l’altra, accusandomi di non essere abbastanza carina, non cantare abbastanza bene, non avere abbastanza talento, non essere stata sposata abbastanza, e ora che non sono abbastanza giovane (…) Ora sto combattendo la discriminazione basata sull’età, ora sono punita per aver compiuto 60 anni.
